Tumban and Bhakthi, male and female dogs, were Amma’s two cherished children. Bhakthi passed away on November 21, 2021, a few years ago, and Tumban passed away on Thursday, August 15th, while Amma was in Japan after completing Her US tour. Tumban’s passing marked the end of an era for the residents of Amritapuri ashram as he had lived a life akin to a spiritual aspirant for over 20 years.

Tumban and Bhakti enjoyed much freedom in Amritapuri ashram and were seen as more than just pets; they behaved like spiritual beings. While Bhakti embodied qualities of surrender, Tumban cherished his freedom and was deeply attached to Amma, seeking Her love and attention.

Upon being informed of Tumban’s death, Amma requested that his body not be buried until She returned to Amritapuri. Therefore, his body was kept in the freezer until Amma arrived on August 18th morning. She then performed Tumban’s last rites in the presence of all the ashram residents after the evening bhajans at around 8:30 pm. Witnessing Amma performing Tumban’s last rites with Her eternal love and compassion was a heart-rending yet spiritually uplifting sight.

Tumban’s first encounter with Amma was quite remarkable. He randomly showed up in Amritapuri and patiently waited until she called him. Upon doing so, Amma named him Tumban, which means abundance. His devotion to Amma and obedience to the Guru truly embodied abundance.

Until Tumban became extremely ill, he consistently attended Amma’s evening bhajans, sharing one side of Amma’s seat while Bhakti crawled under Amma’s seat.

Tumban and Bhakti demonstrated amazing commitment to the ashram routine. They joyfully attended Amma’s meditation and bhajan sessions with great focus and joy and regularly participated in morning archana and scriptural classes.

Additionally, Tumban served the ashram by patrolling the grounds and alerting others by barking when questionable human or animal characters were spotted. He also greeted and accompanied late-night visitors to the accommodation office to ensure they felt welcome.

It is with heavy hearts that all of Amma’s children express their love and gratitude to Tumban for the example he set. Tumban was a shining example of performing duties perfectly in tune with the ashram dharma. Amma’s children humbly bow down to Tumban, a rare being, a shining example who taught us many lessons of obedience to the Guru.

Soon after Her programs in Seattle, Amma and the tour group left for Oakland City, located in the San Francisco bay area. Amma gave four days of the darshan program at Oakland. Amma was accorded a grand public reception at Oakland Marriot City Center.

Thousands had poured in from all parts of San Francisco to welcome Amma after a gap of 4 years. On all the days, devotees meditated in Amma’s presence. Also, Amma led a special Peace prayer for world peace and harmony. Amma conducted a Spiritual retreat.

At the end of the spiritual retreat, Amma personally served ‘Prasad’ to thousands of devotees who participated in the retreat. Devotees from Oakland offered a traditional Punjabi dance as an expression of their joy.

Amma gave ‘darshan’ to all of them, patiently listened to their heart, and offered consolation. After 4 days of programs at Oakland, Amma and the tour group will travel to Los Angeles.

Amma’s next tour stop is Los Angeles.

Amritapuri celebrated Sri Krishna Jayanti with a variety of programs. The day began at 8 a.m. with devotional chanting (Nama Sankirtanam) followed by Go Puja (cow worship). In the afternoon, at 3 p.m., a grand procession took place at the ashram, where many children, including foreigners, dressed up as Krishna and Radha. The evening festivities included traditional games like Uriyadi, cultural programs, bhajans, and at 11:30 p.m., a Balagopala Puja, Bhagavata recitation, and prasadam distribution, all in the divine presence of our beloved Amma.

In her Sri Krishna Jayanti message, Amma said, “The word kṛṣṇa means ‘one who attracts and gives joy.’ From the moment Kṛṣṇa took birth in Kamsa’s dungeon to the moment he ascended to heaven, all his actions were heart-captivating. His actions uplifted and gave enormous joy to humans. Kṛṣṇa was a purṇāvatāra—a complete and perfect incarnation.

“His life had the splendor of the peacock feather, the perfect harmony of the songs flowing out of his flute, and the purity of the Tulasi leaf. Kṛṣṇa’s life was a commentary on the Vedāntic principles and an interpretation of the dharma that befitted the age. Interaction with Bhagavān became a yoga—divine union—for everyone.

“Śrī Kṛṣṇa’s life was a flow. In the grand flow of his life, he did not reject any part or role assigned to him. He fully immersed himself in every role he undertook and played it to perfection. This is why he was able to face every circumstance with a smile.”

After her four-day program in Oakland, Amma arrived in Los Angeles for her programs at the Hyatt Regency, Irvine, California. Devotees from across California gathered joyously to welcome Amma after a five-year hiatus.

The event was filled with spiritual activities and loving moments. Amma led meditation sessions, delivered soul-stirring satsangs, and sang heart-touching bhajans each day. She gave darshan to thousands, sharing in their joys and sorrows day and night.

Notable attendees included Maria Shriver, former First Lady of California when Arnold Schwarznegger was Governor, and her daughter, Christina Schwarznegger. Shriver is also a broadcast journalist, a trailblazer in women’s empowerment, and a member of the Kennedy family, an American political dynasty known for its spirit of public service. They both sought Amma’s blessings in spending time with her.

After concluding the program, Amma and her tour group travelled to New Mexico for the next leg of America Yatra 2024.
